Yesterday, Google published the latest distribution figures of the Android operating system which ran over a 7-day period. The numbers reveal a consistent growth in the amount of Android users running Jelly Bean, whilst older versions of the operating system continue on their path towards extinction.

Google has just released the latest distribution figures of the Android operating system over a 14-day period ending on September 4. The numbers show a consistent growth in the amount of Android users running Jelly Bean while older versions of the operating system, including Froyo, continue on their journey towards extinction.

It’s taken some time, but Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is finally beginning to claim a notable share of devices. Almost six months after its release, the software has been installed on 10.2% of smartphones and tablets, while Gingerbread’s share slowly diminishes. The vast majority of users are still running Gingerbread, Android 2.3, but the software share has dropped below the 50% mark for the first time in over a year.

While I should be used to this by now, I just can’t help but feel depressed every time a new Android distribution chart comes out. You see, way too many devices are left running outdated versions of Android and it’s really the average consumer who ends up getting the shaft.
