While I should be used to this by now, I just can’t help but feel depressed every time a new Android distribution chart comes out. You see, way too many devices are left running outdated versions of Android and it’s really the average consumer who ends up getting the shaft.

The latest Android Distribution numbers are out and not much has changed. Timely updates, or updates at all for that matter, continue to be a thorn in Android’s side. No matter who we point fingers at, the fact remains, not enough devices are running the most current version of Android. In fact, more than 50% of Android devices accessing the Google Play store are still running Gingerbread — an almost 2-year old version of Android.

As you can see by the numbers above, it’s still a sad state of affairs when it comes to Android devices being updated to the latest platform version. The majority of Android devices out there are still stuck on Gingerbread — a version of Android released almost 2 years ago. We, of course, can’t blame Google for this, but the lack of updates by OEMs and carriers is downright disgusting.

Boy has it been a slow road for Android 4.0, and while the numbers are still dismal, Ice Cream Sandwich is now populating the second highest number of devices accessing the Google Play Store. Gingerbread remains the majority leader with 60.6% of Android devices running it — quite sad considering it’s almost two years old.

It’s that time again, time to see what kind of progress Ice Cream Sandwich has made in the past month. Well, the good news: it’s up 2.2% points. That brings Android 4.0 up to lucky number 7.1% and rising. With the possibility of Jelly Bean right around the corner, 7.1% is actually quite embarrassing, but I’m guessing carriers don’t really care.
