Custom ROMs for the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX are one step closer after the device finally got its first bootloader unlock. The tweak could eventually allow users to ditch Amazon’s own Fire OS software, but there are some significant caveats.

CyanogenMod, one of the biggest and best custom ROMs, now officially supports Samsung Galaxy Note 4 handsets connected to Sprint and T-Mobile. The latest builds will let you ditch TouchWiz for a purer, Lollipop-based Android experience.

If you want to unlock the bootloader on your Android device or flash a custom recovery so you can use third-party software, you need a Mac or PC. But that could soon change, thanks to Google.

The search giant is reportedly working to bring the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) and fastboot to its Chrome OS platform, allowing those with affordable Chromebooks and Chromeboxes to tinker with Android development.

While most smartphone makers work to make it as difficult as possible to unlock their bootloaders, Sony is one of a small few that almost encourages it. The Japanese company is so supportive of the modding community, in fact, that it has just published a how-to video that walks users through the unlocking process on Xperia smartphones and tablets.
