Google has started rolling out a major update to Google Docs and Sheets, partially bringing its new Material Design theme to the apps and greatly enhancing their capabilities.

Google had previously confirmed that once the Docs and Sheets app get native Word editing functionality, it would remove Quickoffice from the Play Store. This update is just a step in that direction and brings the ability to natively create and edit Word files in the apps.

After finally bringing its Office suite to the iPad on Thursday, Microsoft rolled out an update to its existing Android and iPhone apps that makes one major change: they’re now completely free to use.

Unlike the tablet version, the smartphone apps no longer require an Office 365 subscription.

Verizon has announced that the Android 4.4 KitKat update for the Motorola Droid Mini, Ultra, and Maxx will begin begin rolling out to users in phases starting today. It makes the trio the first carrier-exclusive smartphones to receive Google’s latest KitKat software.

Quickoffice Text Edit

Last year, Google acquired Quickoffice, the most popular office suite application on the Play Store, and in September it made the service free for everyone on both Android and iOS. Now the development team at Mountain View are pushing out this apps first major update, which brings dramatically improved Google Drive integration, in addition to a truckload of bug fixes and stability improvements.

Registered Chrome OS developers now have the option to start testing a major new feature for the operating system. After Google bought QuickOffice last year, the team at Mountain View have been working around the clock exploring avenues on how best to inject the code for reading and editing Microsoft Word and Excel documents in the Chrome OS.
