Almost half of the top 50 apps on iPad are unavailable or have not been optimized for competing devices that run Google’s Android operating system. That’s according to a new report from Canalys, which believes Google should be doing more to encourage top developers to build high-quality tablet apps for its platform.

Despite currently offering what is arguably the best Android handset ever produced, things are going from bad to worse for HTC. The Taiwanese company’s profits have been heading the wrong way for a number of years, and in Q3, it expects to see its first operating loss since going public in 2002.

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 was always going to be a big seller — probably the best-selling Android smartphone of 2013 — but the Korean company has lost $12 billion in market value due to concerns that the two Galaxy S4 variants that were recently announced will have a detrimental affect on its profit margins.

Brokers are also concerned that the growth prospects for Samsung smartphone business have “dimmed” following rumors of a new iPhone trade-in program from Apple.

BlackBerry-Z10

BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry’s last hope at competing with Android and iOS, has gotten off to a good start since its release last week. The BlackBerry Z10, the first of two BB10 devices that will launch in the coming months, has seen strong sales in the U.K., while there’s plenty of pre-order interest in other markets, too.

What’s likely to be most encouraging to BlackBerry, however, is that 50% of pre-order customers in its native Canada aren’t already BlackBerry customers — they’re switching from the likes of Android, iOS, and Windows Phone.
