Galaxy S6 Active to be just as exciting as the original on the inside

Over the past few years, Samsung has been following up its flagship devices with Active variants that are tougher and more robust than the originals, and sources say that the South Korean company plans to do the same for the Galaxy S6.

But this time around, those who buy the Active edition won’t get a watered-down handset with lesser specifications, because the Galaxy S6 Active is expected to be just as exciting as the original on the inside.

“According to our insider sources, the Galaxy S6 Active (SM-G890A) will have the same 5.1 inch QHD Super AMOLED+ display that the ‘regular’ version of the Galaxy S6 features,” reports the reliable SamMobile.

The same sources say the Galaxy S6 Active will also carry Samsung’s new Exynos 7 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage as standard, and a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera with optical image stabilization. The only thing that’s expected to change, then, is the handset’s physical design.

Thanks to its rugged form factor, the Galaxy S6 Active will reportedly be a little bigger than the original Galaxy S6, measuring 73.6 x 146.9 x 8.8 mm (as opposed to 70.5 x 143.4 x 6.8 mm). It is also expected to carry a larger, 3,500mAh battery.

Although SamMobile doesn’t provide us with any details on the handset’s design, we expect it to be similar to that of the Galaxy S5 Active. Samsung will obviously drop the fancy glass back panel or the Galaxy S6 — and likely its metal frame as well — in favor of strong plastic, which won’t break so easily when dropped.

The Galaxy S6 Active may also be dust- and water-resistant, which the Galaxy S6 is not.

SamMobile says AT&T will initially have exclusivity over the Galaxy S6 Active in the U.S., but it’s unclear when it will be available.
