Qualcomm is hard at work on building a modified version of its flagship Snapdragon 810 processor just for the Galaxy S6, recent reports have claimed — but only handsets powered by Samsung’s own Exynos chipset are expected to be available at launch.

If you have to have a Qualcomm chip, then, you’re going to need to wait.

“Snapdragon 810 will be used in some of Galaxy S6 variants,” tweeted Eldar Murtazin, editor-in-chief of Russian blog Mobile-Review, who has been very reliable in the past. “But not from a start in April/May.”

It’s unclear at this point what the advantages of the Snapdragon variants will be. In the past, Samsung has used Qualcomm’s chips for their superior 4G LTE connectivity, but if the company has been able to match that in its new Exynos chips, there may be little between them.

Some smartphone users prefer Snapdragon processors, however, and to cater to them, Qualcomm is said to be working on a custom version of the Snapdragon 810 just for the Galaxy S6 after Samsung discovered heat issues with the original model.

But who knows how long you’ll have to wait for it. The good news is, Murtazin says the “Exynos is incredible fast in S6,” so you shouldn’t have to suffer a hit in performance if you don’t want to wait.
