The wait for HTC’s next-generation One M9 is almost over. The company has today begun issuing invitations for a March 1 event in Barcelona, where we will get our first glimpse at “what’s next” from the Taiwanese smartphone maker.

HTC doesn’t confirm the One M9 will be announced on its invite, of course, but every flagship One-series handset we’ve seen so far has been announced around the same time — usually just before Mobile World Congress, which takes place in Barcelona in early February.

Whether you liked last year’s One M8 or not, its successor should be worth getting excited about. Recent rumors have promised us another high-end design, and more cutting-edge specifications. HTC is also expected to address one of the One’s biggest complaints this year and finally deliver a camera that won’t disappoint.

I carried a One M8 for months last year, and if it wasn’t for the OnePlus One, it would be my favorite Android-powered handset of 2014. I loved its aluminum form factor, its BoomSound speakers, its incredibly battery life, and even its Sense 6 user interface. But like many others, I was let down by its camera.

Roll on March 1!
