WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging platforms on the planet, finally offers one of the most basic messaging features — the ability to tell you when your messages have been read. The app will now display blue checks instead of green ones next to messages that recipients have seen.

You may have thought WhatsApp already offered read receipts; one of the biggest WhatsApp misconceptions is that two green checks means a message has been seen. But that’s not the case. One green check confirms your message has been sent, but two simply confirms it has been delivered to the recipient’s handset.

Now those checks will turn blue to confirm your message has not gone unnoticed. If it’s part of a group chat, the blue checks will appear when every member of the group has read it.

You do not need to update your WhatsApp app to see the change; it’s a server-side change that has already implemented. If you haven’t already noticed the blue checks, then, open up the app again and take another look. Bear in mind, however, that blue check will only appear next to message sent after the update was made.
