Leaked image gives us our first glimpse at HTC’s Nexus 9

The HTC Nexus 9 creeps ever closer.

A leaked image purportedly showing off the back of the upcoming HTC Nexus 9 for the first time has been published on Twitter. The device carriers the familiar Nexus styling with what appears to be a soft touch, matte plastic finish, the Nexus brand etched into its casing, and a large rear-facing camera lens.

The device actually looks a lot like the Nexus 5, only it’s much bigger. It seems to be sporting a much squarer form factor with a new aspect ratio that’s unlike the 16:9 widescreen ratio we’re familiar with when it comes to Android-powered tablets. We first got a peek at this new design in the Nexus 9’s FCC filing, which popped up over the weekend.

The photo was published by @Upleaks, an incredibly reliable source, who confirms that the Nexus 9 will be plastic — not metal as previous have suggested. We have no reason to doubt the authenticity of this information given @Upleaks’ track record, but unfortunately, there are no specifications accompanying the picture.

But we don’t really need them, because almost everything there is to know about the Nexus 9 has already been reported. Documents filed in an NVIDIA lawsuit last month confirmed the slate would be powered by its own 64-bit Tegra K1 chip, and other reports have confirmed its Quad HD display and 8-megapixel camera.

We’ve also heard from several sources that the device will get its official unveiling next week — on October 16. About the only thing still unconfirmed at this point, then, is the Nexus 9’s price tag.
