You can now beam music to your Sonos speakers directly from the Google Play Music app for Android, thanks to a collaboration between Sonos and Google. The functionality is baked right into the regular Play Music app — negating the need to use Sonos Controller.

Play Music is the first major service to boast Sonos integration. To begin streaming music to your Sonos system, you’ll need to sign into your Gmail account from the services menu on your Sonos.

You’ll then be able to hit the “cast” button inside Play Music and select the Sonos device you wish to play through — just like you would to stream to Chromecast or a Smart TV.

Both devices will need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and you’ll still need the Sonos Controller app installed on your Android device — even though you won’t actually need to use it.

This functionality is thanks to a tight partnership between Sonos and Google.

“In Google Play Music, we’ve found a great partner to bring this vision to life for the first time on a global scale,” Sonos said in a post on its blog. “Together, we’ve created a music experience that shows how media, devices, and sound can seamlessly work together in the home.”

Because Sonos streaming takes advantage of features specific to Android, it’s likely this feature will be exclusive to Google’s platform — at least initially. Those using Play Music on iOS, then, appear to be out of luck for the time being, though it seems unlikely the exclusivity will last too long.

Sonos streaming through Google Play is available in 25 countries around the world. Before you get started, check out the funny promo video below.
