AcDisplay: The Closest You’ll Get To The Moto X’s Active Display On Other Androids

AcDisplay

Moto X owners will tell you that one of the best things about their smartphone is its Active Display feature, which offers a peek at incoming notifications from the lock screen. Unfortunately, this is exclusive to the Moto X — not even the Moto G has it — and Motorola won’t bring it to rival Android devices, for obvious reasons.

There are some nice alternatives for other Androids, though — such as AcDisplay, which is probably the closest we’ll get to Active Display on unsupported smartphones.

AcDisplay was developed by recognized XDA Developer AChep, and just like Active Display, it allows your smartphone to display incoming notifications on the lock screen. So, with just a quick glance at your device, you can which alerts are outstanding and decide whether you need to act on them or whether you can ignore them.

AcDisplay is designed to be light on resources and battery, AChep says, but of course, having your display light up all the time is going to have some impact on your battery life — how much exactly all depends on how many notifications you get.

One of the reasons why Active Display is so good on battery life is the Moto X’s AMOLED display, which is more energy efficient that traditional LCD panels. With an AMOLED display, unused pixels don’t consume power, so by keeping most of the display black and showing only small icons, Active Display takes very little energy from the battery.

If your handset has an AMOLED display, then, AcDisplay will have a smaller impact on your battery life, while those with LCD displays are likely to notice it more.
