BBM For Android 2.3 Gingerbread Leaked Ahead Of February Release

BBM-Gingerbread

Earlier this week, BlackBerry announced a “special” version of BBM that will deliver support for devices running Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread. It’s set for its public release next month, but users can now download a leaked APK file and get their hands on it early.

The original BBM for Android doesn’t support Gingerbread — you need Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or later. But a surprising 21 percent of Android users are still running the 3-year-old operating system. What’s more, many of them will be based in emerging markets where BlackBerry is still a hugely popular brand.

Adding Gingerbread compatibility makes perfect sense for BBM, then. “Supporting Gingerbread will allow millions more Android users to download the popular BBM instant messaging app,” BlackBerry said earlier this week when it announced its new version of the app.

The app is in testing right now, and its public release is set for next month — but if you follow the download link below, you’ll get a pre-release APK that’ll allow you to use it early. It may not be completely stable, but it certainly works — and it should tide you over for now.
