Samsung has confirmed that it is working on QHD (2K) smartphone displays with ultra high-definition resolutions just weeks before it is set to announce the Galaxy S5. At least one model of the South Korean company’s upcoming flagship is expected to feature a QHD panel, which will boast an incredible 2560×1440 resolution.

Samsung company made the announcement at the Semiconductor and Display Technology Roadmap Seminar, but it has hardly come as a big surprise. Given that it was one of the first companies to introduce 1080p smartphone displays, we had little doubt it would be one of those pushing 2K panels in 2014.

Furthermore, a report that surfaced earlier this month claimed that at least one Galaxy S5 variant will be available with a 2K display — though not all of them will. This model is also expected to offer an Exynos 6 processor and a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera, according to sources for SamMobile.

Samsung also announced that it is developing UHD 4K displays as well with even greater 3480×2160 resolutions, that could result in smartphone displays with more than 700 pixels-per-inch. These won’t be ready until 2015, however.

To me, that just seems far too over the top. 1080p displays are already sharp enough — the naked eye cannot see individual pixels on a 1080p smartphone panel — so what’s the point in 4K for a smartphone? Or even 2K, for that matter. It just seems like an unnecessary cost to get greater numbers on a specs sheet.

What do you think? Would you like a 2K smartphone?
