Get $100 Credit From AT&T When You Take Out A Data Plan With Your New Nexus 7

Google_Nexus_7

AT&T is currently offering new Nexus 7 customers a “special offer” through the Google Play Store, which will see $100 of credit added to your bill when you take out a new two-year data plan. The deal applies to the HSPA+ Nexus 7 and it’s valid until Thursday, February 14. But is it really worth it? We’re not so sure.

If you’re already an AT&T customer, one that’s happy with the carrier’s service, and you know you’re going to pay the company for a two-year data plan for your tablet anyway, then maybe it isn’t such a bad deal. But for the vast majority of customers, there are a number of drawbacks.

Firstly, the tablet itself isn’t any cheaper if you get it with a data plan — you’ll still need to pay Google $299 for it. Then you’ll be taking your unlocked device and locking it to AT&T, which means if you decide to switch carriers later on, you’ll also need to switch tablets. And finally, you need to consider that the Nexus 7 is now six months old, and that there’s a good chance Google will refresh it this summer.

With that being the case, committing yourself to the current Nexus 7 for two years may not be such a great idea if you know you’ll want the latest model six months down the road.
