XFINITY TV Player App For Android: Watch Thousands Of ON Demand TV Shows & Movies

I’ve complained before about cable providers dragging their feet when it comes to bringing our TV subscriptions to our mobile devices, but today, Comcast takes a baby step with their new XFINITY TV Player for Android. Comcast/XFINITY subscribers will now be able to browse and watch thousands of XFINITY ON Demand TV shows from networks and premium channels such as HBO, Starz, Showtime, Cinemax, TNT, TBS, Cartoon Network and BBC America (yay for Doctor Who).

Your available content will depend on what Comcast/XFINITY package you subscribe to and will give you the ability to browse by TV Series, Movies, or Networks. There’s also parental controls to avoid your young ones from watching reality shows like Jersey Shore or Bad Girls Club.

I’ve given the app a shot on my Galaxy Tab 2 and everything is great minus the video quality. I found the movies a bit pixelated but I’m hearing reports of a crisp picture from others, so I’m going to give it a shot on my Galaxy Nexus to see if it’s a tablet thing.

I’m happy to see this app and service available and it’s about time. If you’re interested here’s what you’ll need:

  • Internet connection (Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G)
  • Android phone or tablet running Android 2.3 and higher.
  • XFINITY TV or Comcast Digital Video service. You will also need a subscription to one or more eligible channels to play content.
  • Comcast ID or Comcast.net email address and password.

I’m pretty sure this will finally have me dropping Netflix. Now all I have to do is cross my fingers and hope the next step is live television streaming.
